Generalized Hybrid Simulation Framework for Structural Systems Subjected to Seismic Loading, PEER Report 2007-101

2007

A new hybrid simulation system (HSS), namely nees@berkeley, developed at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), is presented in this study. Validation of the HSS is sought through testing steel cantilever columns with predictable structural response that is verifiable by purely numerical simulation of the experiment.

Two procedures are developed and implemented in the HSS with the aim of enhancing the accuracy and reliability of the pseudo-dynamic test results. The first procedure is a feed-forward error compensation scheme that aims at correcting the experimental systematic...

2008

The Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center is leading an initiative to develop guidelines for new high-rise construction that will meet intended safety and performance objectives following future earthquakes, particularly when alternative means of design are employed. An initial task of this initiative was to investigate the issues associated with identifying seismic performance equivalent to that achieved by code and whether a higher seismic performance should be targeted for these buildings. Many stakeholders were interviewed for this purpose, and a workshop was convened to...

Treatment of Uncertainties in Seismic-Risk Analysis of Transportation Systems, PEER Report 2008-02

Evangelos Stergiou
Anne S. Kiremidjian
2008

The objective of this study is to evaluate the consequences of earthquake events to transportation network systems and to develop a probabilistic framework in which to quantify them. The estimation of structural damage to bridges due to earthquakes is discussed, and a methodology is presented to assess the probability density function of the structural loss for single or multiple bridges. The two new uncertainties that are included in the formulations are those related to the replacement cost and the damage factor. Operational loss is computed based on the fixed-demand assumption. The...

Guidelines for Nonlinear Analysis of Bridge Structures in California, PEER Report 2008-03

2008

The Guidelines for Nonlinear Analysis of Bridge Structures in California presents a collection of practical and readily implementable recommendations for the modeling and analysis of highway bridges and overpasses subjected to earthquake ground motions. The specifications are applicable for Ordinary Standard Bridges in California as defined according to Caltrans Seismic Design Criteria (SDC) 2004. The main emphasis of the document is the implementation of nonlinear analysis procedures intended primarily to estimate seismic demand on critical bridge components and systems. These...

One-dimensional seismic ground response analyses are often performed using equivalent-linear procedures, which require few, generally well- known parameters. Nonlinear analyses have the potential to more accurately simulate soil behavior, but implementation in practice has been limited because of poorly documented and unclear parameter selection and code usage protocols, as well as inadequate documentation of the benefits of nonlinear modeling relative to equivalent-linear modeling. Regarding code usage/parameter selection protocols, we note the following: (1) when input motions are from...

Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering Design Evaluation Procedure for Bridge Foundations Undergoing Liquefaction-Induced Lateral Ground Displacement, PEER Report 2008-05

Christian A. Ledezma
Jonathan D. Bray
2008

Liquefaction-induced lateral ground displacement has caused significant damage to pile foundations during past earthquakes. Ground displacements due to liquefaction can impose large forces on the overlying structure and large bending moments in the laterally displaced piles. Pile foundations, however, can be designed to withstand the displacement and forces induced by lateral ground displacement. Piles may actually “pin” the upper layer of soil that would normally spread atop the liquefied layer be low it into the stronger soils be low the liquefiable soil layer. This phenomenon is known...

2008

The research presented in this report is part of a larger analytical and experimental investigation to develop and validate design methods for self-centering concrete columns that inherently have relatively small residual displacements following severe earthquake shaking. The main objectives of this study are to investigate the seismic performance, identify the key design variables, and evaluate the effect of different ground motions and different column configurations for a self-centering reinforced concrete (RC) column with unbonded prestressing strand placed at the center of the cross...

2008

By virtue of their locations, bridges that cross bodies of water are particularly likely to be damaged by lateral spreading of liquefied soils. The behavior of these soils can cause unusual forms of seismic demands on bridges and their foundations, ranging from rapid modifications of input motion amplitudes and frequency contents to high levels of kinematic loading associated with permanent deformations of the supporting soils. This report describes the application of the PEER methodology of performance-based earthquake engineering to a bridge structure founded on liquefiable soils. In...

Toward Earthquake-Resistant Design of Concentrically Braced Steel-Frame Structures, PEER Report 2008-08

2008

In recent years, typical steel construction in regions of high seismic risk has shifted from moment-resisting frames to concentrically braced frames. As a result of the increased popularity of braced frames, the poor performance of some conventionally braced frames in past earthquakes, and the limited experimental data available on the inelastic response and the failure characteristics of braced-frame systems, a series of experimental and analytical investigations were initiated. The tests reported on herein contain some of the first data available on braced frames constructed in...

NGA Model for Average Horizontal Component of Peak Ground Motion and Response Spectra, PEER Report 2008-09

Brian S.-J. Chiou
Robert R. Youngs
2008

We present a model for estimating horizontal ground motion amplitudes caused by shallow crustal earthquakes occurring in active tectonic environments. The model provides predictive relationships for the orientation-independent average horizontal component of ground motions. Relationships are provided for peak acceleration, peak velocity, and 5-percent damped pseudo-spectral acceleration for spectral periods of 0.01–10 sec. The model represents an update of the relationships developed by Sadigh et al. (1997) and includes improved magnitude and distance scaling forms as well as hanging-wall...
